Hey everyone, I just registered and am looking forward to getting (and modding) a PSP in the very near future. I'm in the US Army and currently injured, so I have nothing but free time for the most part - I also don't really have any reliable way to get mail (the building I live in has no address, so I have to ship stuff to the S-1 office), so I'd prefer not to order anything online. Is there a shopping list of things I'd need to get custom firmware running on a new psp? The tutorials I see all seem kind of advanced/specific.

Hey nemt, welcome to the site.
Since you're new to the scene, you need to keep in mind that not all PSP's are moddable yet. The GO cannot be modded at all. As for the other PSP's, as long as they come with firmware below or with 5.03, it can be modded.
The firmware is quite old and its unlikely that you'll get a new PSP with a firmware version lower than that. There has been a proof of concept of a hack working on firmware 6.20, but that hasn't lead to a fully usable custom firmware yet. So be careful when you get your PSP, and after you do, we're always here to help. :)

Is there any way to find one with older OFW at a store these days? I've heard some of the bundles have 5.03 or earlier.

Well I'm not aware of anything specific to look for to identify this. So I guess its upto luck, or you can get an old one from eBay.

I've secured a Star Wars PSP-2000 on ebay instead, with firmware 5.03 - looking forward to installing M33-6 on it, think I have a pretty good grasp of the instructions now.
To play an .iso, does it need to have some sort of patch applied? (I apologize if instructions for playing .isos aren't allowed here).

Ya a patch needs to be applied. First you need to check whether or not your PSP comes with a TA-088v3 motherboard, if it does, you'll be installing a partial custom firmware using the ChickHEN hack.
If it doesn't, you'll be installing a full fledged custom firmware such as 5.00m33-6 or the latest, 5.50GEN-D3, using HellCat's Recovery Flasher AFTER doing the ChickHEN hack. You can do it partially as well, but I recommended doing it fully.
I'm not mentioning the how-to process here, just giving you an overview of things. Google will get you everything, just search using the terms I used. And if you're confused about something, STOP! and post back. :)

It has a TA-085v1 motherboard, I can do a full CFW install, right?
